Magnetic
Resonance Imaging of Musculoskeletal Infections Classification of inflammatory
conditions MR technique (advantages, disadvantages)

findings
Classification
Non-infection | Infection | Edema | Cellulitis | Myositis | Myositis | Arthritis | Arthritis* | Spondylitis | Spondylodiskitis* | Edema | Osteomyelitis |
*
tuberculous versus pyogenicMR Technique MRI
Advantages
–
multiplanar aquisition – without ionizing
radiation – imaging signal is based on
events at the molecular level –
anatomical, biochemical, physiological information –
no adverse reaction to contrast
–
imaging method of choice in soft tissue vizualization (subcutaneous
tissue, synovium, cartilage, tendons, nerves) –
very sensitive to subtle bone changes (edema, erosions)
MRI
Disadvantages
–
Accesibility – Costs –
Time consuming – Contraindications
–
metallic implants – claustrophobia
MR
Technique
• MRI Protocol –
T1 TSE, STIR – T2 TSE fat sat in orthogonal plane
(axial) – T1 fat sat + i.v. contrast in 2 orthogonal
planes – at least one adjacent joint included –
fast sequences on large body surface for rapid evaluation of the
extension of the process – whole body-MR protocol in
patients with sepsis for rapid evaluation of septic determinations | |
